Responsibilities
About the role:
Data is one of General Motors Financial – GMF - most critical assets. This role is essential to ensuring Data Governance initiatives are delivered effectively using Agile methodologies. By enabling structured execution, cross-functional alignment, and continuous improvement, the Scrum Master supports the delivery of trusted, well-managed, and regulatory-compliant data, accelerating analytics, AI, and modernization efforts while reducing operational and regulatory risk.
The Scrum Master – Data Governance is responsible for guiding Data Governance teams and stakeholders in adopting Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) to deliver high-value outcomes across governance initiatives.
This role acts as a servant leader and change agent—coaching teams to improve maturity, remove impediments, and foster a collaborative, high-performing environment. The Scrum Master ensures governance backlogs, priorities, and delivery outcomes align with enterprise data strategy, regulatory requirements, and business value.

In This Role You Will
- Agile Delivery & Execution
- Facilitate Agile ceremonies including Daily Standups, Sprint Planning, Reviews, and Retrospectives
- Drive structured execution of Data Governance initiatives (e.g., data stewardship, catalog, data mapping, data quality enablement)
- Track sprint progress using metrics such as velocity, burndown, and backlog health
- Ensure transparency of progress, risks, and dependencies across stakeholders
- Backlog & Product Alignment
- Partner with Product Owners and Data Governance leads to manage and refine governance backlog
- Ensure priorities align with regulatory requirements, enterprise priorities, and business value
- Support roadmap execution across Data Governance programs
- Agile Coaching, Continuous Improvement & Impediment Removal
- Identify and remove obstacles that impact team delivery and effectiveness
- Coach teams, stakeholders, and leaders on Agile principles and best practices
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, high-quality delivery, and Agile maturity
- Enable teams to self-organize, improve performance, and adopt Agile ways of working across Data Governance
- Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication
- Foster effective collaboration between Data Governance, Privacy, Technology, and Business teams
- Promote transparency, alignment, and clear communication across stakeholders
- Support cross-functional decision-making and governance processes
- Governance Program Enablement
- Support execution of Data Governance priorities including:
- Data stewardship programs
- Data quality initiatives
- Data catalog and metadata management
- Regulatory data mapping and compliance activities
- Ensure Agile practices are embedded into governance workflows and delivery models
What makes You an ideal candidate?
- 4–6 years of experience leading Agile teams as a Scrum Master
- Strong expertise in Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban)
- Experience in using Agile delivery tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps, TFS)
- Strong understanding of backlog management, sprint tracking, and Agile metrics
- Proven ability to coach and mentor teams and leadership
- Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to influence without authority and lead through collaboration
- High emotional intelligence and ability to navigate complex environments
- Experience working in large enterprises; financial services preferred
- Understanding of data governance, data management, or regulated environments is a plus
Working effectively within an AI enabled environment:
- Ability to use AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) to support daily work
- Skills in evaluating AI outputs for accuracy, compliance, and bias
- Experience integrating AI into workflows to improve efficiency or insights
- Familiarity with AI assisted research, summarization, and content generation
- Understanding of responsible AI use, including ethics and data protection
- Scrum Master Certification required (CSM, PSM I, PMI-ACP)
- Advanced certifications preferred (PSM II, A-CSM, PSM III, CSP-SM)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience preferred
